If you’d have said to me last week that Hilltops nebbiolo might be the closest thing to an Italian version I’d tasted from Australia, I’d have been a little skeptical, to say the least. But here we are, with a fresh, savoury, red-fruited number that is as close to a little Langhe as I reckon I’ve tried from this country, including those that’ve seen uber-long maceration. It’s no Barbarseco, but it’s not trying to be. Savoury and drying but lots of red berry and leaf, damp earth and tobacco. Heaps of whole bunch notes shine through: cherry, strawberry, a little stalkiness. Whether you may think it’s a pretender or not, I don’t need to pretend anything. It’s delicious.
